More than 20,000 companies now operate out of SPC Free Zone (as of June 2026).
Three of them tell you more about what actually works here than the licensing brochure ever could: Lightning Source Sharjah, a global print-on-demand operation that chose Sharjah as its regional base; Sky for Publishing and Distribution, a publisher that picked SPC Free Zone specifically because it understood their industry; and the Amazon UAE partnership, which has helped hundreds of SMEs move into e-commerce.
Through their stories, we learn more about what makes setup success tick. Here’s us sharing these insights with you.
How SPC Free Zone Supports Founders
Since launching in 2017, SPC Free Zone has built its reputation on cutting the time between deciding to start a business and actually operating one.
With the world’s first AI-generated business license, instant licensing, a keen entrepreneurial ecosystem, and packages combining up to five business activities under one license starting from AED 5,750, SPC Free Zone gives setups more than just a license.
Setup is only half the story. SPC Free Zone also has over 100 pivotal partnerships and offers a range of SPC Plus concierge services covering everything from corporate bank account opening assistance, often completed within three working days, to tax registration, filing, and bookkeeping.
That network includes e-commerce and logistics names like Amazon, Aramex, and FedEx, banking partners including Mashreq, Emirates NBD, and RAKBANK, and more than 60 SPC Plus services in total, with founders’ free benefits from these partnerships collectively worth AED 31,000.
That ongoing layer of support through SPC Plus is what shows up in the three case studies below, in different forms.
Case Study: Print on Demand (Ingram in Sharjah)
Lightning Source Sharjah is a joint venture between Lightning Source LLC, part of Ingram Content Group, and the Sharjah Book Authority, physically housed inside SPC Free Zone.
SPC Free Zone itself opened in 2017, but Lightning Source came later: Ingram signed the agreement at BookExpo in New York on 31 May 2019, and the facility went live in November 2021 before ramping up to full operation through 2022. Trade press has since called it “the anchor tenant the project needed,” the kind of flagship occupier a development gets built around.
Once running, it became one of the first large-scale print-on-demand facilities in the Middle East, giving publishers a distribution network of 40,000-plus retailers, alongside libraries, schools, and universities worldwide.
The facility processes orders within 24 hours and can ship to select destinations within 48 hours. Titles sit ready to print rather than stacked in a warehouse, described by Publishing Perspectives as “a kind of digital international warehouse, ready to be printed as needed but costing nothing to store,” which also cuts the process’s carbon footprint compared to traditional print runs.
Excited about the opportunity this new venture brings for Sharjah.
John Ingram, Chairman of Ingram Content Group
The facility has kept growing since. In April 2025, Lightning Source Sharjah announced a partnership with Rushd Bookstore, a Saudi academic and educational bookseller with nine locations, at the fourth Sharjah International Booksellers Conference. The deal lets Rushd fulfil customer orders directly through the Sharjah facility, giving customers, in the words of Rushd’s CEO Abdulrahman Alhamdan, “faster access to a broader catalogue than ever before.”
If you’re looking to set up a printing business in the UAE, SPC licenses printing activities under the same instant-license model as everything else.
Case Study: Publishing (Sky for Publishing and Distribution)
Sky for Publishing and Distribution FZE set up as a publisher within SPC Free Zone, and its shareholder, Haitham Hassan, has credited SPC Free Zone for understanding “the specific needs of our industry. SPC Free Zone, with its global focus on print and publishing, proved to be the perfect fit. Their streamlined licensing process and support for intellectual property protection were invaluable in establishing Sky for Publishing and Distribution.”
Hassan’s experience confirms a real point of difference for a publishing business: a generalist free zone can issue a license, but it won’t necessarily have licensing staff who understand copyright and IP concerns specific to publishers the way a dedicated publishing free zone does.
A second publisher voice makes the same point from a different angle.
The journey to success has never been easy. But with SPC I have learned that nothing is impossible. I have always believed that success can only be achieved when we are surrounded by the right nurturing environment. And today I have recognized how fortunate I am to have chosen SPC.

Case Study: SME and E-Commerce Growth
In August 2024, SPC Free Zone signed a partnership with Amazon UAE aimed squarely at SMEs looking to move into e-commerce. The deal bundles licensing assistance, online registration support, and live seller education webinars, with hundreds of SMEs already registered with SPC Free Zone receiving business expansion support as part of the rollout.
This is a programme-level story rather than a single company’s growth arc, and it shows what infrastructure looks like at scale: SPC Free Zone-registered businesses get direct access to Amazon’s own seller tools, from inventory management to fulfilment, without needing to build that relationship independently. For a founder looking to set up an e-commerce business, that’s a meaningfully shorter path from license to first sale.
So how do you actually do this? Start with an e-commerce license from AED 5,750, then follow our own guide to selling on Amazon.ae, which walks through setting up your Amazon seller account once your license is active.

What These Businesses Have in Common
None of these three stories are about SPC Free Zone being the cheapest option available, though it often is. Each one leans on something specific: Lightning Source Sharjah exists because the facility is physically inside SPC Free Zone; Sky for Publishing chose it for industry-specific licensing knowledge a generalist zone doesn’t have; the Amazon UAE partnership works because SPC Free Zone built the relationship on behalf of its SMEs rather than leaving each one to negotiate alone.
What these stories don’t show is the paperwork in between: visas, medical tests and the bank’s identity checks on the owners. SPC Plus handles all of it for you, so budget time for those steps even when the license itself is instant.
The common thread isn’t the license price. It’s that each business found infrastructure or a relationship already in place that would have taken far longer to build from scratch elsewhere.
