  • Mainland vs Free Zone: If you’re an employee hired by a mainland company, all regulations and disputes fall within the ambit of Dubai’s MoHRE (Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization). Free Zone employees on the other hand are governed by the rules of their respective Free Zone.  
  • Skill Category: Workers are categorised into Skilled (Levels 1-4 of the MoHRE classification, where most positions require an degree or diploma attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA)) and Unskilled (Levels 5 and below).   • Offer Letter: The official MoHRE-approved contract, signed by both parties.  

A Step-by-Step Process of Getting A Dubai Employment Visa 

  1. Job Offer and Work Permit Pre-Approval and Approval  

The employer applies for a visa quota from MoHRE requesting to hire a foreign worker. Once approved, the job offer needs to be signed and returned. After this, the employer submits your application for pre-approval. Following pre-approval, it’s submitted for approval. This can take anywhere between 1 to 5 working days.  

  1. Entry Permit Issuance  

If all your documents are in order, you’ll be issued an entry permit (if you’re outside the UAE) or a “Change of Status” (if you’re inside the UAE). Both are valid for 60 days: it’s essential to complete all residency procedures within this timeline.  

  1. Medical Fitness Test  

The employee must then undergo a mandatory medical test at a government-approved medical center. Typically, the employer directs the employee to visit only specific medical centers for their test. Depending on the skill level of the designation mentioned on the employee’s visa, they may also need to attend the mandatory “Tawjeeh” training.   

  1. Emirates ID Registration  

The employee (if it’s their first ever Emirates ID) must then visit an EIDA center to provide their biometric details, namely their fingerprints and a retina scan. From here, the Emirates ID is usually issued within 1-2 weeks. The Emirates ID helps you open a bank account, pay utility bills, apply for a driving license, and more.  

How Many Days Does Employment Visa Processing Take in Dubai?
